The aim of the Pre-Prep Department is to provide an exciting, stimulating and happy start to school life.
The Reception classes are based in the Chestnuts building, which provides them with a bright, friendly and secure environment where they also have access to their own outdoor learning area. The children make use of the schools superb facilities for PE and ICT lessons and make extensive use of the school grounds to find out about the natural world, setting off on regular ‘welly walks’ to the woods and other areas.
The children are taught by a dedicated and caring team of teachers and nursery nurses and also benefit from specialist teaching for music and swimming. We place great emphasis on early reading, writing and mathematical development while also fostering creativity, independence and investigation. More information about the curriculum can be found on the Reception page of the website.
In Years One and Two the children enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum. Academic skills are developed through carefully planned Schemes of Work, which follow the National Curriculum.
The subjects they study include:
- English,
- Mathematics,
- Science,
- Topic (a topic based cross curricular approach to History & Geography),
- French,
- R.S.,
- Art, Craft & Design Technology,
- Information Technology,
- Music,
- P.E.,
- Movement and Music,
- Games and Swimming.
Class teachers teach most subjects, but there are specialist teachers for Music, French and Swimming. The children visit the ICT suite each week for their IT lesson. They also use the swimming pool, the sports hall, the library, the music room and the games pitches.
In Year One children may join the choir. In Year Two all start recorder lessons, and some will be chosen to play in the Year Two Recorder Club. Children may also take individual instrumental lessons. All perform in The Pre-Prep Christmas Performance and The Pre-Prep Summer Concert. The choir and recorder group also perform at these events and at the annual Speech Day.
