The Reception classes at Crosfields are always busy either in their classrooms, the creative area or the Reception outside area. A flexible, topic based approach, is used to provide the children with a variety of experiences linked to the six areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. Visitors are always welcome in Reception and this year these have ranged from the fire service, to guide dogs, to eggs who we watched hatch into chicks! A broad outline of the EYFS curriculum is given below.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
It is in the first years of school life that children are taught the key skills of confidence and independence. Carefully structured activities improve their concentration and help them to learn to share with others. Our children are encouraged to be self-motivated, well mannered and respectful to all.
Communication, Language and Literacy
Children are taught to read and write using a synthetic phonics approach. Books and other activities are sent home regularly so you can support your child’s learning in this crucial area. Speaking and listening skills are fostered throughout the day as they form such an important foundation for all learning. The school uses a cursive script and this is taught from the beginning.
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
A range of practical activities are provided to teach the children basic number skills such as recognition, counting and ordering. Simple calculation is introduced through games and rhymes moving on to more formal tasks if appropriate. Mathematical vocabulary is a taught to enable the children to understand comparisons, measuring and shape.
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
The children are encouraged to show interest in their immediate environment and to explore their own culture and beliefs as well as those of others. Most importantly they are encouraged to ask questions to help them make sense of the world around them.
Creative Development
The children explore and use a range of media to respond imaginatively to a variety of stimuli. Dance, drama and music all form part of the children’s experiences in this subject.
Physical Development
Young children naturally enjoy being active and through regular PE lessons we develop the children’s gross motor skills, while also teaching them to be independent with changing into and out of their PE kits! Opportunities for the children to improve their fine motor skills, such as pencil and scissor control, are also provided on a very regular basis.
ICT is used to support the children’s learning in all subject areas and the children regularly use the ICT suite in Acorns as well as making use of digital cameras and other equipment.
In addition to the termly synopsis, which can be viewed below, parents are kept informed via a weekly curriculum information sheet.
Children are admitted full-time into Reception the September after their fourth birthday.
