Homework

  • Spellings will be sent home on a weekly basis on a worksheet
  • Reading books will be sent home regularly through the week
  • We suggest some reading at home each day, this could be shared reading, parent reading to child, discussing the contents/pictures, child reading from school book or own book from home

Spring Term

Reading

  • Decoding new words
  • Awareness of punctuation and expression when reading

Writing

  • Use a try it out book to practise unknown words
  • Use a simple word mat to find common words
  • Capital letters, full stops and a wider vocabulary when writing
  • Recognise the main elements that shape different texts
  • Write chronological texts using simple structures
  • Distinguish fiction and non fiction texts
  • Convey information and ideas in simple non-narrative forms

Handwriting

  • Develop a comfortable and efficient pencil grip and good sitting position
  • Begin to join letters – linked to weekly phonics – and present work neatly
  • Practice writing the high frequency words introduced in the weekly spellings

Grammar

  • Revise proper and common nouns and pronouns

Summer Term

  • Use a range of strategies for decoding new words
  • Read with a growing awareness of punctuation
  • Read with increasing expression and intonation
  • Begin to develop the skill of prediction
  • Answer questions about what has been read

Writing

  • Extend the number of sentences when writing
  • Use known phonics to spell new words
  • Use capital letters to start a sentence and a full to stop to end it
  • Follow written instructions
  • Write instructions following the accepted layout
  • Consider the features of fantasy stories
  • Plan a story and organise ideas into a logical structure
  • Explore familiar themes and characters through improvisation and role play

Handwriting

  • Use the joins taught in formal handwriting lessons in other writing

Phonics / Spellings

  • Learn at least ten spellings linked to The Jolly Phonics spelling/phonics scheme – to be sent home each week on a spelling practice sheet
  • All ten spellings to be tested weekly
  • Complete work in class to consolidate phonic knowledge
