Speaking and Listening

Writing
- Write a sentence with increasing independence
- Use a try it out book to practise unknown words

- Begin to use a capital letter to start a sentence and a full stop to end it
- Begin to use a wider vocabulary when writing
- Recognise the main elements that shape different texts
- Write chronological texts using simple structures
- Distinguish fiction and non fiction texts and their different purposes
- Convey information and ideas in simple non-narrative forms
Handwriting
- Continue to develop a comfortable and efficient pencil grip
- Continue to develop a good sitting position for writing
- Begin to join letters – linked to weekly phonics
- Practice writing the high frequency words introduced in the weekly spellings
- Be aware of the need for good presentation of writing at all times
Grammar
· Begin to use a dictionary
- Revise proper and common nouns and pronouns
- Introduce the verb
- Learn about the present, past and future tenses and when to use them
Phonics / Spellings
- Consolidate silent e rule
- Introduce vowel diagraphs
- Learn five or ten spellings from the phonic scheme – to be sent home each week on a spelling practice sheet
- All spellings will be tested in school at the end of the week
