Autumn Term

Flight, bouncing, jumping and landing

To learn to run in and out around each other visiting lots of different places in the hall

  • To be able to bounce two feet to two feet and one foot to two feet, repeating bouncing patterns
  • To jump high up in the air using arms to help. Showing a wide and thin shape in the air
  • To sink down into a small curled shape and to explode again into a thin or wide shape
  • To bounce high going sideways, forwards and backwards
  • To travel between the apparatus in a bouncy way and then jump from a low part of it
  • To demonstrate skills to others

Points and patches

  • To be able to name and balance on small parts of the body
  • To perform movements consistently and fluently and to travel confidently and competently using different parts of their body
  • To balance on different combinations of body parts.
  • To balance on large body parts and know how to vary the shape of the balance
  • To combine large and small body parts to balance on and to join two balances together smoothly
  • To link two balances and to adapt floor work onto apparatus safely

Spring Term

Rocking and rolling

The children will be taught:

  • The concept of rocking as a movement: thinking about and trying out body parts on which they can rock
  • To combine rocking and rolling actions, adapting floor work to the apparatus
  • To practise body shapes safely in rocking and rolling actions, incorporating jumps into the movement
  • To plan and link a sequence of movements together
  • To practise and perform actions smoothly
  • To practise smooth transfer of body weight
  • To be able to roll on or along apparatus safely
  • To spin, rock, turn and roll with control on various parts of the body

Wide, narrow and curled

  • To travel, balance and jump confidently showing a variety of body shapes
  • To understand and demonstrate contrasts in level and shape
  • To travel long and thin into one space and then wide and short into another
  • To show different shaped balances and travelling, with the emphasis being close to the ground or far away from it
  • To plan a sequence of patterns using 2 or 3 movements which are then remembered, repeated and performed
  • To perform a limited range of skills on the floor/apparatus with a partner
  • To show sequences with a clear beginning and end

Summer Term

Country dancing

The basic steps for the following country dances will be taught:

  • Anything Goes:  following instructions on directions, circling left, right, forward and back,
  • Beginners Mixers: learning right and left elbow swing, and to promenade.
  • Yankee Doodle Mixer: learning to work together in pairs and to sashay in and out

The children will be taught:

To understand how different movements can be linked together smoothly

  • To recognise and use changes in level, speed and direction
  • To understand and perform movements where different parts of the body lead into the next action
  • To link travel and balance into one action
  • To join movements smoothly to make a sequence
