Music

Throughout the year the children will work on their performance skills through singing and playing instruments.  They will learn to use their voices expressively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes.  They will rehearse and perform with others, developing their awareness of being in a group and the importance of working together and experiencing the enjoyment that comes from performing in a group!  They will use the percussion instruments to develop musical ideas and composition skills.  The children will have opportunities to create musical patterns and explore and organise sounds and musical ideas.  This will develop their ability to represent a particular idea or scenario.

Through performing their own music and listening to a range of music performed by others, the children will begin to understand some of the elements of music and these are broken down over the year, giving each term a specific focus.

Autumn term – Pulse.

This unit will develop the children’s understanding of pulse and the importance of counting when performing.   They will experience the pulse in many different songs and pieces of music performed by themselves and others.

Spring Term – Dynamics and Duration.

The duration unit begins to introduce the idea of note length and develops the children’s ability to distinguish between longer and shorter sounds and the effect they can have.  In the dynamics unit we will focus on the importance of having a range of sounds, loud to soft, and how they can be used in music.

Summer Term – Tempo.

This unit looks at how the tempo in music can change suddenly or gradually and the effects that can have.  The children will look at famous pieces of music and identify the tempo changes as well as creating their own music.

Throughout the year the children will take part in many performances including a Christmas play, An Easter celebration and a year group concert.
