Religous Studies

The Religious Studies department at Crosfields aims to help form “religiously literate young people who have the knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to their age and capacity – to think spiritually, ethically and theologically.”

This takes place through a reasoned exploration of Christianity and other World Religions.  Religious Studies is an academic discipline, although it also plays a key role in developing within children an understanding of the spiritual dimension of life.

Religious Studies will support children and young people in reflecting upon developing and affirming their own beliefs, values, and attitudes to an exploration of shared human experiences and of the place and significance of religion in the contemporary world.

The objectives of curriculum Religious Studies include:

  1. The development of appropriate skills: for example ability to listen, to think critically, spiritually, ethically, and theologically to acquire knowledge and organise it effectively to make informed judgements
  2. The fostering of appropriate attitudes. For example: respect for truth, respect for the views of others, awareness of the spiritual of moral responsibility, of the demands of  religious commitment in everyday life and the challenge of living in a multi-cultural multi-faith society.

Religious Studies is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims and values and philosophy of the school.

By the end of their course of study at Crosfields pupils should:

  1. Have an appreciation of the spiritual dimension of life
  2. Have a sound knowledge of the basis of Christian faith
  3. Have a good understanding and appreciation of other religions with particular reference to ethics, beliefs and festivals
  4. Have developed personal qualities such as perseverance, good habits of study, initiative and independence of mind
  5. Have a foundation upon which to build future study of this subject
