All children at Crosfields get the opportunity to swim. Apart from years 7 and 8, each year group has a weekly swimming lesson. In years 7 and 8 a swimming lesson is combined with PE and a module of swimming is included in the syllabus each year.
Reception groups have two fully qualified swimming instructors and this generous ratio ensures that every child has the opportunity to learn to swim. Of course one lesson a week is minimal and good swimmers tend to swim out of school with parents or in out of school group swimming lessons. All staff who teach swimming have a recognised poolside qualification.
In the Junior and Senior schools children are given the opportunity to join the swimming squad, trials are held early in September. The swimming squads train weekly. We have swimming fixtures throughout the year, against other Prep Schools. The opportunity to qualify for District, Regional and National IAPS events is possible. Within the school we have House swimming galas where all children are given the opportunity to swim for their house at an appropriate level.
Throughout the school the children learn the fundamental skills that establish improved technique in three major strokes (front crawl, back crawl and breast stroke). Emphasis is placed on survival skills so as to improve the childs’s confidence in the water. We are fortunate to have the indoor facility where the children can swim all year round and development can be consistently monitored. It is possible to observe fewer mistakes being made and greater accuracy and speed evident.
