Literacy
We will be following the National Literacy Strategy, and will cover the following:
Word Level
High frequency words, Look, Say, Cover, Check, handwriting, dictionary and thesaurus work, prefixes and various new spelling patterns. This will build on, and consolidate, what the pupils have learnt in the Spring Term. They will continue to practise their handwriting, ensuring that the basic joins are correct.
Sentence Level
Awareness of grammar to decipher new or unfamiliar words, e.g. to predict from the text, read on, leave a gap and return; to use these strategies in conjunction with knowledge of phonemes, word recognition, graphic knowledge and context when reading.
Text Level
Extended stories based on a plan of incidents and set out in simple chapters with titles and author details, paragraphing, sequencing a plot, awareness of authors and locating books by classification in class or school libraries.
Numeracy
We will be following the National Numeracy Strategy, and will cover:
- place value
- addition facts
- subtraction
- multiplication
- division
- fractions
- angles
- capacity
- handling data
- time
We will also continue learning the times tables in class. Please consolidate and practise these, as well as number bonds, regularly.
Science
Healthy Eating
The pupils will learn:
- that all animals, including humans, need food in order to grow and be active
- that foods can be grouped into 3 main categories
- that an adequate and varied diet is needed to keep healthy
- that many things may influence a person’s diet
- that different animals have different diets
Light and Shadow
The following will be covered:
- light and its uses
- how shadows are formed
- how shadows change in length and position
- movement of the sun
- light travelling through materials.
History
We will be learning about the Second World War in our History topic. We will be looking at:
- how we find out about the past
- when and where World War II took place
- the main leaders and key events and dates of the war
- how the Blitz affected civilians
- where the bombing raids took place
- how life differs today from that in World War II
- how defences were used against the bombs
- why children were evacuated
- why there was rationing and what it was
- children’s experiences of war
- why censorship and propaganda were used during the war
- what is was like on V.E. Day
ICT
The pupils will be introduced to sound and manipulating databases. They will:
- understand that e-mail can be used to send messages over distances
- learn to open and read an e-mail
- learn to read, annotate and reply to an e-mail
- understand that e-mails are sent to addresses
- learn how to add an attachment to an e-mail
Art
The focus in Art this term is to continue to develop skills of cutting, sticking, drawing, painting etc. and study the style of different artists.
DT
In addition to Art, we also have a DT project this term which is designing and making sandwiches. The pupils will look at:
- how different people have different preferences
- how different foods have different tastes, appearance, texture and flavour
- how different combinations of ingredients can affect the taste and texture of a product
- how to use tools and utensils safely and effectively
- how to follow a plan
- how evaluating can help to improve their work
PSHE
The PSHE topic for the term is “Building Healthy Environments”. The pupils will look at:
- waste as an environmental issue
- how waste is created from different everyday activities
- the central importance of water in our daily lives
- how water is a precious, sometimes scarce natural resource, which needs to be managed properly and conserved
- environmental issues relating to various forms of pollution
- why we have zoos and their environmental significance
- the works and aims of a range of charities
