This is seen as an important part of the children’s education, giving them a knowledge and sense of history that will contribute to their general understanding and development. Knowing about themselves, their families and their past will help the children to understand why they are as they are and a study of the nation’s history and how it has interacted with others will help them understand other people.
The Department subscribes to the following aims of History teaching:
- to stimulate or create an interest in the study of the past
- to provide an opportunity to investigate periods of importance to the present age
- to develop an understanding of concepts essential to History, such as chronology, continuity and change, cause and effect
- to provide the opportunity to acquire skills in evaluation, analysis, investigation and communication
- to encourage pupils of all abilities to pursue the study of History in their later life
The programme of study follows the guidelines laid down by the QCA for National Curriculum Key Stages 1, 2 & 3 with significant emphasis on the following:
- Romans, Anglo-Saxons & Vikings in Britain.
- Life in Tudor Times.
- Victorian Britain.
- Britain since 1930.
- Ancient Greece.
- Ancient Egypt.
- The Aztecs.
- Voyages of Discovery & Exploration.
- Medieval Realms.
- The Making of the United Kingdom, 1500 – 1750.
