English at Crosfields is delivered by a dynamic and vibrant department of specialists and enthusiasts who are committed to instilling a love of reading, appreciation of literature and the freedom of self-expression in every child. We want our children to develop independence, the confidence to be creative and the skills that will enable them to flourish in all aspects of life.
The importance of spelling, punctuation and grammar is emphasised within all writing throughout their time at Crosfields, and not just in English lessons but in every learning area. Children are able to explore all forms and styles of writing to discover where their strengths lie.
Opportunities are given to question, explore and work collaboratively in an environment in which they are encouraged to challenge conventional ways of thinking. We use a wide variety of methods to help children along on their learning journey including group discussions, debates, development of project work using classroom laptops and iPads as well as dramatising pieces of work in our purpose-built theatre. Children also have many opportunities to present projects, deliver speeches and PowerPoint presentations to their peers in order to build up their confidence and abilities in public speaking.
Throughout the year, we run numerous writing and speaking competitions to challenge and enthuse. A highlight of the year is our annual Poet Laureate competition in which each child is invited to write their own original poem and a Crosfields Poet Laureate is then nominated for the year. Each year for World Book Day, we aim to bring in a well-known author who will excite budding writers and deliver workshops to help children master the craft of writing.
Although all our senior pupils are prepared rigorously for Common Entrance examinations and a number of learners will be assisted with preparing for scholarship papers, our aim is to develop the child as a whole so that they are fully prepared for the demands they will face in senior schools and demonstrate resilience in the face of challenge.
Above all, we want each child here at Crosfields to have a real love for English, to write with confidence and accuracy in a variety of genres and have an unquenchable thirst for reading.
