At Crosfields Science is ‘hands on’ and gives pupils as many opportunities as possible to find things out about the world around them.
Pupils are supported with their decision making as appropriate, but are encouraged to make their own decisions about how an investigation should be carried out, considering equipment to be used and level of certainty around any results achieved.
Up to the end of Year 4, pupils carry out Science work in their classrooms, but are also encouraged to explore the world outside following the Science Bug scheme. Our younger pupils also make visits to the Science laboratories to carry out and witness specific experiments. These are always highly exciting occasions and give the younger children an insight in to what there is to look forward to in their future education! From Year 5 all Science takes place in our laboratories, which were extensively refurbished in 2014.
By learning through investigation (both thought and practical), pupils acquire the skills of ‘working scientifically’ that will transfer to all areas of their education and lives beyond Crosfields School: Measurement, ‘Experimental skills and investigations’, ‘Analysis, evaluation and problem-solving’, and ‘Changing scientific attitudes’.
