Marvellous Maths Week

Marvellous Maths Week

10 Oct 2019

With much excitement and anticipation, Maths Week began on a Monday morning and a whole schedule of activities kicked off with children in Years 6, 7 and 8 solving a number of mathematical problems and puzzles, courtesy of the Brain Blaster Workshop Company.  Designed to build confidence, and working in pairs and small groups, the children set about solving 3D shape puzzles.  Taskmaster Angela Gould from Brain Blaster was on hand to help and show them how it was done, too.

Later that day, children in Year 4 took part in the Mathematics Challenge, where 16 local schools visited Crosfields to compete in an afternoon of mathematical tasks in the Sports Hall that included mental arithmetic and games.  Organised and run by expert Douglas Buchanan, children around the hall worked in pairs to complete the maths tasks that Mr. Buchanan displayed on the screen.  Crosfields pupils in Year 7 were stationed at the desks to check the children's work and help them with their scores.  To their sheer delight, one of the Crosfields teams came second!  (We didn't fix it, honestly!)

Throughout the week, the children also enjoyed working with the Happy Puzzle Company who brought in a clever array of puzzles that encouraged children in all year groups to work together, solving visual maths problems.

Elsewhere around the school, girls and boys in the Pre-Prep used lego and butterflies to think about symmetry, as well as getting creative by painting repeating patterns.  Architecture Workshops also returned to school for their popular bridge building workshops that explored geometry and the properties of shape. The week culminated with children in Year 8 spending time in the Nursery, having fun with numbers.  It really was a terrific week that encouraged the children to think about the application of maths in everything that they did, and demonstrated that maths can be found everywhere.
