Year 6 have been reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland recently, and in keeping with the theme of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, classes held an exciting Mad English Punctuation Party!

In their party, pupils assumed the personality of a punctuation mark.  Bringing their learning on punctuation and grammar to life, girls and boys took on different roles.  Exclamation marks were very loud, question marks asked uncomfortable questions, brackets pulled others away from conversations, and ellipses trailed off mid-sentence…

The children also had to demonstrate how their punctuation mark might stand, walk around, and mingle at a party; how they would greet a friend or introduce themselves to another punctuation mark.  One item of fancy dress could be worn to the party to represent the character of their punctuation mark.  The pupils then completed further writing tasks, developing the personality of each punctuation mark with their favourite food, movie, pastimes, and career options.  It was a fun way to to reinforce their knowledge of how to use punctuation effectively in their writing in a very unusual way!
