Learning Support

Our learning empowerment approach

At Crosfields, learning support is centred on empowerment rather than replacement. Our Learning Empowerment Team works alongside teachers, teaching assistants and pastoral staff to ensure pupils with diverse learning profiles can thrive in the classroom. We follow a graduated response, using high quality adaptive teaching to meet most needs within lessons. This neurodiversity affirming approach recognises the strengths individuals bring and ensures that all pupils can access the curriculum with their peers, building confidence, independence and a strong sense of belonging.

Celebrating neurodiversity

Crosfields actively values neurodiversity, embracing the varied thinking and learning styles that enrich our community. We focus on keeping pupils learning alongside their peers, using assistive technologies and research-informed strategies to promote independence. Staff receive regular CPD to stay current with best practice, ensuring pupils experience an environment that supports them academically, socially and emotionally. With Woody the therapy dog at the heart of the department, our team creates a warm, supportive space where every pupil can flourish, without any additional fees for Learning Empowerment support.

Support in Pre-Prep

In PrePrep, pupils benefit from early, nurturing support designed to build strong foundations in literacy, numeracy and social communication. Specialist staff lead small group interventions where needed, while most support happens in class through adaptive teaching. Children may also work on executive functioning or social skills or supported by one of our ELSAs or our trained therapy dog, Woody. When external assessment is helpful, we guide parents through the process and welcome visiting specialists. Our goal is always to develop confidence and independence as pupils move up the school, and all Learning Empowerment services in PrePrep are provided without charge.

Support in Juniors

As pupils enter Juniors, the graduated approach continues, with targeted support delivered in small groups within The Hub, our dedicated Learning Empowerment space. Sessions focus on literacy, numeracy and additional needs such as executive functioning or social communication. Our highly trained staff, including SENCOs, specialist teachers, assessors, ELSAs and teaching assistants, use screeners and cognitive tools to guide intervention. Dyslexia assessments are available inhouse, and we work closely with external professionals when appropriate. Woody, our therapy dog, and our ELSAs provides additional emotional support. With the exception of formal diagnostic dyslexia assessments, all support remains free of charge.

Support in Seniors

In Seniors, pupils may attend timetabled group sessions in The Hub, focusing on developing effective study skills, supporting cognition and reinforcing progress across core subjects. Interventions may also target social communication or executive functioning, always with the aim of increasing independence. Our specialist team conducts screening, cognitive assessments and inhouse GCSE access arrangement assessments where needed. External professionals are welcomed, and SENCOs remain involved in admissions to ensure the right support is in place. Apart from full diagnostic dyslexia assessments, all Learning Empowerment services are offered without additional cost.
