Seniors Co-Curricular & Enrichment

Inspiring curiosity, confidence and character beyond the classroom

At Crosfields, learning does not end when lessons finish. Our Senior Co‑Curricular and Enrichment Programme is a defining feature of school life, broad, ambitious, and purposefully designed to extend every pupil’s experience far beyond the curriculum. Running from 16:30–17:30 each day, the programme gives pupils the space to explore interests, discover new passions, and challenge themselves in a supportive and vibrant environment.

We believe that education flourishes when pupils are given opportunities to grow creatively, intellectually, socially and physically. The Senior Programme provides these opportunities in abundance, combining teacher‑led clubs, specialist coaching, enrichment pathways and nationally recognised awards.

A rich and varied co‑curricular offer

Many of our activities are delivered by talented and passionate members of the Crosfields teaching team and are included in school fees. These clubs focus on academic enrichment, physical development, creativity, and personal growth. Current options include:

  • Running and Fitness
  • STEM: hands‑on science and engineering investigations
  • Strength and Conditioning: guided physical training
  • Netball
  • Meeples, Marbles and Beans – strategy, logic and social play through board gaming
  • Jewellery Making
  • Cricket Nets
  • Computational Thinking: coding, problem‑solving and digital logic challenges

These activities allow pupils to push boundaries, connect with peers, and develop a sense of independence and confidence that is carried back into their academic work.

Specialist, charged activities

To extend the programme even further, Crosfields partners with highly qualified external coaches and organisations. These activities carry an additional charge and offer professional‑level experiences in specialist fields:

  • Climbing: on professional climbing walls
  • Chess
  • Judo
  • Golf
  • Music Technology (M:Tech): digital composition and studio skills
  • LAMDA – speech, drama and communication training with accredited qualifications
  • Musical Theatre

These opportunities broaden pupils’ horizons and help them unearth hidden talents that might not emerge in a classroom setting.

The Senior Enrichment Programme

The Senior Enrichment Programme is a carefully structured journey that develops essential life skills year by year. It ensures that every pupil is exposed to meaningful experiences that build character, resilience, teamwork, digital literacy, creativity, and leadership.

Year 7 — Foundations for Success

Year 7 pupils engage in a programme designed to build essential early skills as they transition into Senior School. Activities include:

  • The £10 Challenge – developing entrepreneurial thinking and financial literacy
  • Cooking – practical skills for independence and healthy living
  • First Aid – essential life‑saving knowledge and confidence
  • Musical Theatre – encouraging creativity, expression and collaboration
  • The iDEA Award – a national digital skills award promoting innovation and enterprise

These foundational experiences nurture curiosity and establish the habits of participation that underpin later success.

Year 8 — Expanding Skills and Independence

Year 8 builds on these foundations through opportunities that push pupils intellectually, creatively and personally:

  • Peter Jones Enterprise Scheme – entrepreneurial thinking and real‑world business challenges
  • Self‑defence – confidence, awareness and personal safety
  • Touch Typing – valuable digital skills for modern learning
  • Photography – creativity, composition and digital editing
  • Ian Michael Award – a prestigious research and presentation award honouring a former headteacher

Pupils begin to demonstrate greater independence, responsibility and initiative through these activities.

Year 9 — Leadership, Critical Thinking and Advanced Projects

In Year 9, pupils take on more sophisticated challenges that encourage leadership, global awareness and academic depth:

  • Barclays Life Skills – preparing pupils for the world of work and financial responsibility
  • Model United Nations – debating global issues and developing diplomatic thinking
  • Toastmasters – public speaking, confidence and communication mastery
  • Film‑making – storytelling, collaboration and technical production skills
  • Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) – a research project equivalent to half a GCSE, developing independence, analysis and academic rigour

These experiences help pupils mature into thoughtful, articulate and driven young adults.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Challenge, adventure and personal growth

From Year 9, pupils are invited to join the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a nationally recognised programme highly valued by universities and employers. Pupils can pursue:

Bronze (Years 9–10)

Silver (Years 10–11)

Through volunteering, skills development, physical challenges and adventurous expeditions, pupils learn resilience, teamwork, leadership and independence—skills that last a lifetime.

Woodley Festival of Music & Arts

Performance, creativity and confidence in a supportive setting

Crosfields’ pupils also have the opportunity to take part in the Woodley Festival of Music and Arts, a well‑established local festival providing a warm, encouraging space for pupils to perform before a professional adjudicator. While the festival has a competitive dimension—with medals awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place—its emphasis remains on enjoyment, creativity and personal growth.

Performers receive detailed written and verbal feedback, making it a valuable experience for developing musicality, confidence and stage presence.
