Key Stage 2 Curriculum

Key Stage 2 Curriculum

At Crosfields, Key Stage 2 is a time of discovery, ambition and growing independence. Our curriculum is designed to spark a lifelong passion for learning, empowering every child to aim high and achieve more. Through a broad and dynamic programme taught by expert subject specialists, pupils are inspired to think deeply, question boldly and embrace every opportunity ahead.

Innovative learning for a changing world

Innovation sits at the heart of our approach. From Year 3 onwards, pupils build strong digital literacy skills through hands-on experiences in Computing, Science and the Creative Arts. They learn programming, explore digital design, take part in interactive science experiments and engage with emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality.

Alongside classroom learning, pupils in Years 4–6 use personal devices to enhance and extend their studies, giving them the confidence to navigate technology with purpose. Co-curricular digital opportunities, from coding clubs to robotics challenges, further nurture future-ready skills.

A diverse, inclusive and empowering curriculum

With diversity recognised as one of our School’s greatest strengths, our curriculum reflects a rich mix of cultures, perspectives and learning experiences. Pupils encounter global literature, multicultural stories and creative work from a wide range of voices. This inclusive approach ensures that every child sees themselves reflected in what they learn, while also broadening their understanding of the world around them.

Specialist teachers support different learning styles and abilities, adapting lessons to stretch, challenge and support every pupil. Our “teach to the top” philosophy ensures that ambition is encouraged, celebrated and fully scaffolded.

Opportunities that broaden horizons

Opportunity shapes daily life at Crosfields. Pupils enjoy a wealth of enrichment options including STEM projects, robotics, cookery, photography, enterprise activities and performance. National competitions, from maths challenges and general knowledge quizzes to writing and STEM awards, offer further chances to shine, with our pupils consistently reaching national finals.

Our calendar of day trips, workshops, visiting speakers and residentials brings learning vividly to life and helps pupils connect classroom study with real-world experiences. All of these opportunities are included within our fees.

Building independence and readiness for Seniors

As pupils progress into Years 5 and 6, they move between specialist classrooms, mirroring the structure of Senior School and nurturing independence, organisation and confidence. Combined with clear communication between school and families, termly reports, parents’ evenings and book looks, every child is supported to thrive.

Curriculum

Years 3 and 4

Pupils in Years 3 and 4 are taught by their form teacher for the majority of their lessons. These years are crucial for building a strong foundation in academic subjects whilst developing the skills pupils need across the curriculum. We nurture individual aptitudes, foster a thirst for learning and ensure personalised provision benefits every pupil. This phase of the pupils’ exciting Junior journey secures their sense of identity and belonging, fully preparing them for the path ahead.

Our curriculum is enhanced by trips and an annual residential, which are all included within our fees.

Here’s a glimpse of what residentials our Year 3 and Year 4 pupils have to look forward to:

  • Year 3: Adventure activities at Calshot Centre including climbing, skiing, archery, and beach games.
  • Year 4: A trip to Ufton Court for historical battle re-enactments, a banquet, and archery.

Years 5 and 6

Year 5 brings new experiences with specialist teaching for all subjects. Pupils move from room to room and are taught by specialist teachers in specialist teaching rooms: such as our Junior science lab. Time with form teachers at the beginning and end of each day is part of our nurturing framework that supports pupils as they build on their personal organisation, self-discipline and motivation. This model ensures that pupils are adequately prepared for the pattern of study that they will experience in Seniors. In Year 6, our pupils are ready to take on the challenges of more leadership responsibilities.

Our many enrichment opportunities, trips and an annual residential, included within our fees, unlock potential and the key 21st century skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, collaboration and critical thinking.

Here’s a glimpse of what residential opportunities our Years 5 and 6 pupils experience:

  • Year 5: Outdoor adventures at Grittledon Activity Centre with climbing, archery, team building activities and forest skills.
  • Year 6: Exciting experiences at Celtic Camping, featuring surfing, coasteering, and paddleboarding.
