The long-awaited pedestrian crossing on Shinfield Road is helping make journeys to and from school safer for Crosfields’ pupils and families.
The new crossing, located near the school’s main entrance, marks an important milestone for the local community. To celebrate, our squirrel mascot, Oakley, was among the first to put the crossing to the test. The timing is particularly fitting as October marks International Walk to School Month, which encourages children and families to choose active and sustainable ways to travel. The new crossing will make it easier for more pupils to walk, cycle and travel safely to school while helping to reduce traffic in the local area.
Mr James Sadler, Head of Operations, said: “We are always looking at ways to improve our School Travel Plan. The completion of this crossing is a fantastic outcome for our families and the wider community, and we are grateful to everyone who has helped bring this to fruition. It is wonderful to celebrate an improvement that will help more children enjoy safe, active journeys to and from school.”
Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, who worked tirelessly with our parent community to champion the need for a safer crossing, said: “Having campaigned for a new crossing on Shinfield Road for more than five years, I am delighted it has finally been completed. I would particularly like to thank the Crosfields parents, and in particular Mrs Rachel Moore, for their hard work and perseverance.”
She added: “Many children were unable to cross the busy Shinfield Road safely and as a result their parents had to drive them to school. This new crossing will mean that more local children can cycle and walk to school, and I am sure this will also reduce congestion.”
