How to choose the Right Senior School: Questions every parent should ask

How to choose the Right Senior School: Questions every parent should ask.

Exam results, facilities and prospectuses can tell you a lot about a school. But choosing the right senior school often comes down to something less tangible: can you picture your child being happy there?

For families approaching the move to senior school, the choice can feel daunting. There is academic provision to consider, pastoral care, opportunities beyond the classroom and whether a school will bring out the best in your child.

So, what should parents be looking for? Here are 10 questions worth considering.

1. What does learning actually look like?

Curriculum information will tell you which subjects are taught but try to find out what happens inside the classroom too.

How are pupils encouraged to think independently? Are they comfortable asking questions and getting things wrong? How does the school stretch pupils who need more challenge and support those who need additional help?

If you are visiting on a normal school day, look at the pupils themselves. Their engagement can tell you a great deal.

At Crosfields, our broad curriculum encourages pupils to think independently, ask questions and make connections across subjects. Alongside strong foundations in STEM, languages and the arts, pupils develop the confidence and skills needed for both exam success and life beyond school.

2. How will my child be known as an individual?

Every child arrives at senior school with different strengths, interests and challenges.

Ask how teachers get to know individual pupils, both academically and personally. Consider class sizes, tutor systems and how information about a pupil is shared between teachers.

At Crosfields, small class sizes and strong relationships between pupils and staff help ensure every child is known as an individual. Tutors, teachers and pastoral teams work closely together, supporting pupils’ academic progress, well-being and personal development throughout their senior school journey.

3. What happens when things don’t go to plan?

Pastoral care can be difficult to judge from a prospectus, so ask practical questions.

Who would your child speak to if they were having a difficult day? Who would you contact as a parent? How does the school deal with friendship issues, setbacks or worries about school?

A strong pastoral system should not only become visible when there is a problem. Ideally, it should be part of everyday school life.

Pastoral care sits at the heart of school life at Crosfields. Pupils have access to a network of support through their tutor, teachers and pastoral team, creating an environment where they feel comfortable seeking help and building resilience when challenges arise.

4. How does the school help pupils make the leap to senior school?

Moving into Year 7 brings new teachers, new routines and greater independence. For some children that is exciting; for others, it can feel like a big step.

Ask what happens before September as well as during those first few weeks. Are there opportunities to meet other pupils? How are new friendships encouraged? What support is available to children joining from other schools?

Transition is carefully planned at Crosfields, with opportunities for pupils to meet staff, build friendships and become familiar with their new environment before they begin. Our aim is to ensure every child feels confident, supported and excited about the move to senior school.

5. What can pupils discover outside lessons?

Sport, music and drama may be the obvious things to look for, but dig a little deeper.

Ask what happens at lunchtime and after school. Are there opportunities for debating, STEM, leadership, volunteering, outdoor challenges, trips and experiences beyond the classroom?

Crosfields encourages pupils to explore new interests, develop existing talents and discover passions that extend far beyond the classroom. What matters is whether pupils genuinely have the chance to try something new and discover where their interests lie.

6. How does the school prepare pupils for GCSEs without making everything about exams?

GCSE results matter, but the journey towards them matters too.

Ask when GCSE choices begin, how pupils are guided through their options and what support is available as expectations increase. You might also want to ask how progress is communicated to families and what happens if a pupil starts to struggle.

At Crosfields, academic ambition is balanced with well-being. Pupils receive personalised guidance as they approach GCSE choices and examinations, helping them develop the confidence, study skills and independence needed to achieve their potential.

7. What are the school’s values, and can you see them in action?

Almost every school has a set of values. The more revealing question is how those values show up in everyday life.

Listen to the way pupils speak to one another and to their teachers. Notice how staff interact with pupils as you walk around.

At Crosfields, our values are designed to be lived rather than simply displayed. They shape the way pupils learn, collaborate and support one another, helping to create a community built on kindness, integrity and respect.

8. What do the pupils say?

One of the best sources of information on any school visit is often the pupils.

If a pupil is showing you around, ask what they like most about school, which lesson they look forward to, what they would change and where they go if they need help.

You do not necessarily need polished answers. In fact, spontaneous ones can often tell you considerably more.

One thing visitors often notice at Crosfields is how confidently and enthusiastically pupils talk about their experiences. Their enthusiasm for learning, involvement in school life and strong relationships with staff provide valuable insight into the day-to-day culture of the school.

9. What does the whole experience cost?

For families considering an independent school, it is worth asking not only about fees, but also what is included. Are there additional charges for activities, trips, catering or other opportunities beyond the headline termly fee?

At Crosfields, we provide clear information about fees, as well as guidance on available scholarships and bursaries. Many aspects of school life that incur additional charges elsewhere are included within our fee structure.

Do not be afraid to ask detailed questions. Schools should be able to explain their arrangements clearly.

10. Can I picture my child here?

You may have compared facilities, results, subjects and activities, but think about your child as you walk around the school.

Would they feel comfortable asking for help? Is there something that would excite them? Can you imagine them finding their people here? And, perhaps most importantly, can you see them growing in confidence over the years ahead?

At Crosfields, we believe every child’s journey is different. Through a combination of academic challenge, outstanding pastoral support and opportunities beyond the classroom, we aim to create an environment where pupils feel they belong, grow in confidence and develop the skills and character to embrace whatever comes next.
